The Harrington Institute of Interior Design has announced a re-structuring in its curricula and academic framework designed to prepare students for interior design careers more quickly with accelerated schedules and industry specific skills.
Harrington, which offers a bachelor of fine arts degree (BFA), an associate degree (AAS) and a diploma in interior design (DIP), will now offer all programs during the day or evening in a 15-week semester, three semesters a year with an increased degree of flexibility in scheduling classes. This will allow students to go to school all year, accelerating the time in takes to earn a degree.
Located in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Ave., Harrington also has added several new courses to its curricula to meet changes in the interior design industry.
"Project Management" will explore students on how projects are actually managed and budgeted. They will discover how to work with contractors, building departments and inspectors and real estate. The course also covers legal issues, the use of project manuals, job logs and scheduling.
"Programming for Interior Design" provides students with a system for analyzing client needs, developing concept statements, project statements and studies all adjacencies to space planning and design.
Also added to the curricula is "Applied ADA and Building Codes" which covers implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act for public spaces and building codes effecting the public health and safety issues of the built environment.
A new "Senior Thesis" course will allow students to research and design complex individual projects that demonstrate the students individual talents, and a "2-D Imaging Class" will teach them how to burn their resumes and projects on CD's after re-structuring and color adjusting their projects. Both courses are designed to enhance a graduating senior’s portfolio.
Founded in Chicago in 1931, Harrington seeks to foster an environment that maximizes students' intellectual and artistic potentials. The majority of the faculty are practicing interior design, architecture and fine art professionals. Harrington is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and the BFA program is accredited by the Foundation for Interior Designer Education Research.
