Robyn Swanson of Arlington Heights received a $1,000 Harrington College of Design scholarship from the Juno Lighting Group for her first place café design and rendering for the Cooking Hospitality Institute of Chicago (CHIC).
The competition, sponsored by Juno Lighting Group, CHIC and Harrington, called for students at Harrington to re-design the CHIC Café, a restaurant open to the public that is staffed by students. Entries were confined to a $5,000 budget, and were required to incorporate Juno’s lighting products.
Also honored were second place winners Amy Larrick and Hayley Multer, of Chicago, who each received a $350 Harrington scholarship from CHIC, and third place winners Rebecca Otto of Plainfield and Michelle Martinez of Melrose Park, who each received a $250 scholarship from Harrington.
The winning renderings will be featured throughout March at the Harrington College of Design student gallery located at 200 West Madison, 2nd floor, Chicago.
"CHIC met with the students to discuss the design requirements for the café renovation," says Peter Klick, Harrington faculty member. "We wanted this competition to be a practical learning experience for the students, who will be required to meet client needs in their professional lives."
Entries were judged on presentation, creativity, and how well the design concept works for CHIC as an educational institution.
The judges were: Jennifer Murohy-Alvarado, factory sales representative from Juno Lighting Group; Lloyd Kirsch, president of CHIC; Marshall Shafkowitz, vice president of academic affairs and student services at CHIC; Laima Rastenis, chair of the general education and restaurant management departments at CHIC; Joe Babula, faculty member at Harrington; and Elizabeth Wersells, faculty member at Harrington.
Both Harrington and CHIC are owned by the Career Education Corporation, a publicly held corporation and one of the world’s largest providers of private, post-secondary education with over 70 campuses in four countries.
